The Lonesome Tree Quartet

The Lonesome Tree Quartet, co-led by pianist Karen Hammack and drummer Paul Kreibich with John Gross on tenor sax and Putter Smith on bass, was first conceived with a shared vision of playing and recording original music composed specifically for each member’s own unique voice. 

The resulting album has  elements of straight-ahead jazz, some Americana as demonstrated by the title song, a Coltrane-inspired ballad and even some blues. It can be hard-edged as well as lyrical and sensitive. It also has been described as “modern and spatial,” “meaningful and emotional,” and “focused and cogent, played with beauty and depth, with not one superfluous note.”

Although the band’s credits are impressive (Ray  Charles, Thelonius Monk, Ornette Coleman, Dee Dee Bridgewater to name a few) their approach to this album definitely puts the spotlight on the collective.

All shows at Sam First are 21+ (no one under the age of 21 will be permitted)
