Marcello Carelli Trio

Drummer, composer, and arranger Marcello Carelli has played with Grammy award-winning musicians such as John Daversa and Brian Lynch in both small group and big band settings. He has also shared the bandstand with Russell Ferrante, Dave Liebman, Ira Sullivan, Martin Bejerano, Walt Weiskopf, Andy Fusco, Wycliffe Gordon, Shelly Berg, and Troy Roberts. Marcello has performed to sold-out crowds in Italy, Suriname, and the Netherlands with his trio and quintet in addition to giving masterclasses in those countries. He is currently getting his master’s in jazz studies at the University of Southern California's Thornton School of Music under the mentorship of 2-time Grammy award-winning drummer and composer, Peter Erskine. It’s the one year anniversary of the release of Marcello Carelli’s debut album The Era, but in addition to playing selections from the record, he will be premiering his latest unrecorded music with his brand new trio. Josh Nelson and Luca Alemanno are not only exceptional musicians, but they are also gifted composers like Marcello. The trio will be playing a few of their tunes as well as the uncommonly-played compositions of Duke Ellington, Cedar Walton, and others. You may even hear a few surprises and a special guest or two. It’s always a memorable night of music when Marcello brings his groups to Sam First, so there’s no doubt this night will be any different. In the words of Peter Erskine, “Whatever Marcello decides to do from here on out — playing, composing, teaching — I have no doubt that he's going to succeed beautifully.”
