Julien Knowles Quintet: "As Many, As One" with Devin Daniels, Javier Santiago, Dario Bizio & Benjamin Ring

An emerging voice of innovation in the Los Angeles jazz scene, Julien Knowles is already making his mark on the global stage in multiple musical arenas. Trumpeter of the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz Class of 2023, Julien is mentored by numerous legendary jazz artists including Ambrose Akinmusire, Terri Lyne Carrington, Gerald Clayton, Herbie Hancock, Walter Smith III, and the late Wayne Shorter.

Since moving to Los Angeles less than two years ago for the full-fellowship graduate program, Julien has toured the United States with Louis Cole, internationally with pianist and mentor Herbie Hancock through the institute of his namesake, and performed as a sideman with Alan Ferber, Joe LaBarbera, and many of L.A.’s prominent jazz artists. Julien appears on Tepper – the upcoming release by ECM recording artist and alto-saxophonist Peter Epstein. Earlier this year Julien’s piece “Tempest Quake” for quartet and string quartet was selected as a winner of the Bridges Composition Competition at the Ravinia Steans Music Institute, and the Reno Jazz Orchestra’s upcoming release Next: New Directions will premiere a number of Julien's compositions and arrangements for large ensemble.

This performance at Sam First will be the final show of Julien's west coast tour, supporting the release later this year of his debut record As Many, As One which features original compositions for quintet and string quartet.
